Hoe radicaal was de Verlichting?

maandag 26 december 2011 – In de New York Times van 23 december jl. staat een recensie over Jonathan Israels Democratic Enlightenment, het derde deel van zijn trilogie over de radicale Verlichting in Europa, die mede dankzij Spinoza zijn oorsprong had in de Republiek.

Het bewuste artikel is geschreven door Darrin M. McMahon, geschiedenisprof aan de Florida State University en auteur van Enemies of the Enlightenment (2001) en Happiness: A History (2006). McMahon vindt dat Israel te veel accent legt op de fanatieke diehards uit de achttiende eeuw. Citaat:
